Structure & Curio: Collective of current artists and alumni from Emily Carr University

Opening Thursday October 16th, 6:30pm at Yaletown Gallery is Structure & Curio. This is a collaborative ensemble show featuring a talented collective of current Artists and Alumni from Emily Carr University. The show explores many bizarre, unusual, interesting, sometimes overlooked examples of Structure within nature, the human body, memories, dreams, etc. Curio (as in decorative curiosities) is also examined through works that range from provocative to colorful, eclectic to thought provoking; each one the invention of a different artist's personality and vision. The ensuing result is a sensory kaleidoscope for the eyes, and mental stimulation for the brain. This sensory stimulation covers a variety of forms, among them painting, sculpture and photographs. The works create a sundry feast providing something for everyone to enjoy, from the seasoned art lover to the neophyte.

Furthermore, this opening is a unique and exciting opportunity to meet the artists firsthand, and discuss their creations and thought process with them. The event and food are free to the public. Space is limited. The show runs until October 31.

Yaletown Gallery is located at 123–1208 Homer Street (at Davie) in downtown Vancouver, and is devoted to bridging the gap between artists and the community and to create opportunities and appreciation for emerging, local artists.

Daulby exhibition a colourful blend of mythic and modern

Vancouver, BC — In October, the Yaletown Gallery is presenting “works by daulby,” a varied collection of paintings and drawings from BC artist Dan Daulby. The exhibition, which features striking selections from the artist’s series both past and recent, runs from September 30 to October 12.

For over 27 years, Daulby has drawn from his rich Aboriginal and Celtic heritage to probe the contradictions within the recurring themes of human existence: conflict, spirituality, sexuality, and death. His quest to seek the truths behind our social facades has produced a dramatic body of work that both challenges and embraces his audience. Says Daulby, “While my ancestry has had a profound influence on my work, rather than shaping my images in a traditional way, it has given me a place of strength from where to seek my own identity.”

The inherent dualities of life are evident in all of Daulby’s work. A highlight of the show is his “dedhed” series, colourful skulls that brim with life, inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead, affirming both remembrance and rebirth. The “shields” series is a personal interpretation of traditional Aboriginal weaponry, a combination of art and function offering spiritual protection.

Other images, including Daulby’s latest work, “urban jungle,” from his new series, “urban,” are gritty, political, yearning. But at the same time, the show features the colourful and graceful energy of his figure studies, and little character portraits of whimsical yet mysterious “noggins.” Much like his work and his roots, Daulby has his own dualities within.

Daulby’s diverse choice of mediums adds depth to the show. His use of oils, acrylics, pencils, and crayons, often in combination, is well-represented, but there are also examples of construction and stone sculpture. In addition to the main exhibit, many unframed originals and prints (limited and open edition) will be on display.

Originally from Winnipeg, Daulby’s work can be found in the collection of the Manitoba government and in private collections around the world. The artist has been featured in numerous exhibitions in BC and Manitoba.

A reception for the artist is being held on Thursday, October 2nd, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Yaletown Gallery is located at 123–1208 Homer Street (at Davie) in downtown Vancouver, and is devoted to bridging the gap between artists and the community and to create opportunities and appreciation for emerging, local artists.

Inspiring artists featured in duo event at Yaletown show

  • Event dates: September 18, 2008 - September 28, 2008
  • Reception: September 18, 2008, 7:00PM
  • Facebook Event
The Yaletown Gallery is hosting a duo event featuring the works of two dynamic and inspiring artists, Rozita Moini-Shirazi and Sholeh Cusack. The show runs from September 18th–28th with the opening reception taking place at 7pm on September 18th.

Best friends since childhood, the artists grew up together in politically charged Iran and their dramatic life experiences helped shape their artistic careers, which have included stops in Hamburg, Berlin, and New York City.

Moini-Shirazi is a visual artist and her works are based on her own life experiences which include living through the Iranian revolution and the Iran- Iraq war. She has been active in the art world for the last twenty years and has exhibited her works in a number of different countries.

Cusack, a painter, left Iran with her daughter in the summer of 1985 amidst bombings and war with neighbouring Iraq. After receiving her MFA in Portland she relocated to New York City and began exploring new ways of connecting to her heritage and the social dynamics of contemporary immigrant life.

Carmen Larsen: Simultaneity

  • Event dates: September 1, 2008 - September 14, 2008
  • Reception: September 4, 2008, 7:00PM
  • Facebook Event
This new body of work consists of approximately 15 pieces of work on canvas and wood panel ranging in sizes from 24 inches by 24 inches to 8 feet by 10 feet. Included in this work is a sculptural figure reflecting the textures and colours of that in the paintings. The sculpture is approximately 1 foot by 6 feet.

The formal qualities of these pieces resemble elements of nature, erosion, decay, reinvention, the effects of time or rather the concept of time. This work signifies what has always been and what will always be, forever changing, yet constant. A simultaneous occurrence. As an object exists at each moment of its history, the same object exists at each moment.

My work is nothing new, simply a new interpretation of what has always been. Before us and after us. Alpha and Omega. There is incredible knowledge that lies in the root of our existence. We just need reminding. This comes naturally through our instinct to wonder and ability to discover. My art is my medium, my path to this state of being, a state that connects us to the core of life. It is not abstract art, rather an abstraction of knowledge... our collective conscious. It is void of all distractions and conscious influence, it’s the purity and simplicity of our core, both beautiful and ugly. It is truth.

Steph Forster: TRANSITION

Yaletown Gallery is hosting Steph Forster in her art show TRANSITION this Thursday, July 31 at 7pm.

A mix of Acrylics/Mixed Media on Canvas, Photography, Poetry, Alternative Sculptures & Live Music. This show is a representation of the processes of re-training cognitions that influence human behaviors that develop character. In order to re-train cognitions one must purge the spirit of all impurities, lies & pain. The art work in this show is a result of the intense processes my psyche has successfully accomplished and executed by re-training my personal cognitions.

Many of us have suffered from a various forms of abuse through out our lives, there are some who over come & move forward after cultivating their spirits by devoting the adequate time required to master their cognitions and re-program their brains to receive and believe truth and there are those who remain lost in their pain using drugs, sex, manipulation or even shopping to cope. I feel it is key to get to the root of each and every problem, by doing this we un-pack each box in our psyche and slowly clean up the mess under the bed. Through art I have found much healing & expression over my life cycle , at times it is the only way I feel I can iterate my feelings accurately. My hope is that you are inspired through my vulnerability to make your own art and come clean with your spirit should you face any blocks or challenges in your world to be able to project light instead of darkness & have fun and make a mess doing it!

Exiled artist harnesses nature to share his past through contemporary paintings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vancouver, British Columbia, July 26, 2008

Exiled artist harnesses nature to share his past through contemporary paintings

Native Iraqi artist Jabbar Al Janabi translates his expertise of music, dance and spoken word into contemporary paintings with the aid of nature’s elements in his debut solo exhibition Phantasma. Layers upon layers of sun-baked paint crack and weather the surface to form haunting and alluring imagery. Phantasma runs from August 5th until the 27th at Yaletown Gallery.

Classically trained at the Baghdad Institute of Art, Al Janabi’s work has been shown in galleries and museums throughout Baghdad and Jordan and focus on mythological themes using symbols from Mesopotamian and Eastern arts.

In 2002, Al Janabi founded the AtmAsphere Art Society with a mandate to develop and promote cross-discipline and cross-cultural collaborations. ANU, an annual fall performance at The Roundhouse is one such project.

Yaletown Gallery is located at 123–1208 Homer Street (at Davie) in downtown Vancouver, and is devoted to bridging the gap between artists and the community and to create opportunities and appreciation for emerging, local artists.

Dancing in the No-Fly Zone

Hello!

It’s been awhile since our last update, so here’s what’s been keeping us busy...

On May 31 at 7pm, Hadani Ditmars reads from her best selling book Dancing in the No Fly Zone: a Woman’s Journey Through Iraq and discusses Iraqi culture under siege. The event will be accompanied by Iraqi visual artists Riad Hashim, Nabil Ali and Jabbar Al Janabi.

Her critically acclaimed book documents the old secular culture in Iraq that survived sanctions and Saddam, but not invasion and occupation.

“Not just another batch of war stories, Ditmars’ fine reports from Iraq reveal aspects of the country — both pre- and post-invasion — that the battlefield junkies overlook. From the comic actor who adores Mr Bean and the conductor who brings Berlioz to Baghdad to the artists and cabaret stars, she seeks out Iraq’s dogged creative spirits, and touches places in the nation’s soul that horror headlines never reach.”

— Boyd Tonkin, the London Independent

This show is one night only, so please RSVP to the Facebook event if you’re planning on attending.

Here at Yaletown Gallery, we’re always striving to make improvements. So if you have some thoughts about what we’re doing right, what we’re doing wrong, please feel free to use our anonymous feedback form and drop us a line. We’d love to hear from you.

Thanks and have a great day!

Fashion Show + Reception: Friday, March 21 at 7pm

Join painter and textile artist Fariba Mirzaie as she unravels our winter cocoon and reveals the new spring season in her solo show Behind the Nature.

Artist Statement

In the darkest moment of our life, if we try to find the light (beauty), it will guide us toward our journey, and then we can start a new life... rebirth.

When looking closely behind everything in the circle of life, we always get the same message. The first of spring is the rejuvenation of nature, the beginning of a new life, and an awakening of the natural life. This awakening symbolizes the triumph of light winning against darkness, represented by winter. It is the point when the oppressive presence of the cold winter finally begins to retrieve with the commencement of the lively and hopeful spring "Rebirth."

March Update

March is definitely roaring out like a lion as there’s a lot going on at the gallery. We’re traveling to L.A. to visit some galleries and discussing plans for a solo exhibit with an award-winning New York contemporary artist.

But not to get ahead of ourselves, the opening for LANDSCAPES IN VANCOUVER had a huge turnout and we’re thrilled with the response. While we work on a platform to showcase the talent of artists, it’s you, the community, that makes it a reality by showing your support. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the work, you’d better hurry. The show comes down March 16.

Following photography, we’re spinning 360 degrees into the fashion show Behind the Nature by textile designer Fariba Mirzaie. We’ll post more details about the show soon.

And last but not least for March, we’re currently accepting submissions for VANCOUVER: Perspectives in Paint that will run March 27 until April 10. You can find all the submission details here:

I think that’s about it for now. Have a good one!
